SME Association of Australia (SMEAA) in the past few weeks:

The SMEAA has had a fast and busy start to 2012. Chair Matt Johnson and CEO Caroline Hong met with Senator Mark Arbib , Federal Minister for Small Business. We had a positive introductory discussion on SMEs, the role of SMEAA and how we can collaborate to help SMEs prosper.
We’ve also had numerous other meetings that we’ll be able to tell you about in greater detail soon– the folks we met will bring new ideas and services to SMEAA members.

Another new initiative is our LinkedIn group. Created in December 2011, the forum has already attracted several hundred members and hosts quite a few lively discussions. Also online, new resources and directory listings have been added on our website.

Another sign that SMEAA is gathering pace came when CEO Caroline Hong was interviewed by bilingual magazine Newland, which reaches 20,000 Chinese business readers.
And don’t forget My Business magazine’s February 2012 issue, which looks at how to create and thrive in a business niche, with help from celebrity chef Maeve O Meara. The magazine also covers recent big changes to social marketing, offers tips for tradies and explains “intrapreneurs” – staff who aim to add value.

Media Release 3 Feb 2012 from Senator Mark Arbib

SMALL BUSINESS URGED TO PLAN FOR TAX CUTS AND $6500 ASSET DEPRECIATION

Minister for Small Business Mark Arbib today reminded small businesses about the important changes being introduced to help them improve cash flow and reduce red tape.

A recent survey commissioned by Telstra Business and the Council of Small Business of Australia (COSBOA) revealed many businesses weren’t aware of the Federal Governments tax cuts.

Senator Arbib said the Government was delivering important changes this year which will help small businesses by allowing them to plan their capital purchases and maximise cash flow.

“From 1 July this year we are changing the asset write off provisions for all small businesses and the changing depreciation arrangements for other assets – saving time, money and paperwork,” Senator Arbib said.

“This means small businesses will be able to immediately write off all new assets valued under $6,500.

“If a small business buys a computer for $3000, they can immediately write off the cost of the computer. This means the business can claim a deduction for $3000 in the first year in its tax return, as opposed to $450 in the first year under the current arrangements.

“In addition they will be able to write off up to $5,000 for new motor vehicles, meaning increased cash flow.

Personal Property Securities Register - update

The Personal Property Securities Register (PPSR) is the register where details of security interests in personal property can be registered and searched. The Insolvency and Trustee Service Australia (ITSA) is the Australian Government agency responsible for administering the PPSR.

The new PPS Register is part of a reform that changes the way secured finance operates in Australia.

Business owners may be affected by the changes to personal property securities laws as:

•borrowers
•providers of credit
•buyers of property that may be subject to a security interest, or
•investors who are contemplating buying into a new business.
The PPS Register replaces a number of registers of security interests and provides a single national noticeboard of security interests in personal property.

Our SME Women Partner - Success Women's Network, has this to share with you.

Circle of Influence

It’s not about what you know, it’s about who you know and who knows you.
The foundation of any relationship is all about people.
The people you meet and who they know.
How often do we dismiss someone at a public place, social event or networking event?
“It’s not my target market, it’s not my ideal client / customer”
Before you do it again think about this....
People interact with family, friends, staff, suppliers, clients, customers, associates, vendors, creditors, contractors, contacts, advisers, professionals, interest groups, the general public, media, partners, sponsors, members and a whole array of people and networks everyday!
AND we haven’t even touched on their social media contacts like on Facebook, Twitter and Linked In.
Ask yourself, how do I tap into all these people?
Well they need to know about you and your business via your advertising, marketing, networking, website, emails, blogs, articles, social media, events, PR and the list goes on.
You want people to KNOW you, LIKE you, TRUST you, do BUSINESS with you and REMEMBER you. It’s takes time.
You want to communicate with these people differently, based on the kind of relationship that you have.
So our recommendation is that you go through your database on a regular basis – develop those relationships and develop your circle of influence over a long period of time.
The more proactive, positive and professional people you surround yourself with the more you’ll be the circle of influence.
Happy Networking!
